The Station Road shop initially trialled the gluten-free option on Mondays, after a customer with coeliac disease – an autoimmune disease triggered by gluten – asked if they would consider the idea. It turned out to be so popular that the manager, Tony Lark, decided to make it twice weekly, and will be opening on Sundays just to serve gluten-free fish and chips.
He said: “This is great news for local coeliacs and another day for all
our regular customers to enjoy our traditional fish and chips. It will
also give weekend visitors to Woburn Abbey and Safari Park the chance to
complete their day out with a rare treat - some gluten-free fish and
chips on their way home.”
He added: “We’ve never opened on a Sunday before, but I hope it will prove just as popular as our Monday gluten-free sessions.”
Amy
Peterson, deputy head of diet and health, Coeliac UK - the national
charity that supports people with coeliac disease, said: “One in every
100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, which is caused by intolerance
to eating gluten. Eating out can be a real challenge. We’re pleased to
support any restaurant or takeaway that introduces gluten-free food and
this is excellent news for people living near Woburn Sands , who will be delighted they can now enjoy fish and chips twice a week.”
Gluten-free fish and chips are served all day Mondays from 11.30am to 9.30pm, and from 19 April every Sunday from 4pm to 8pm.
